Media speculation swirls around Vietnamese low-cost airline VietJet Air rumoured to be in talks to get regulatory clearance for a possible Australian subsidiary.

The airline, which already has subsidiaries in Thailand and Kazakhstan, has reportedly requested an air operator certificate and permission for a locally incorporated operation with 10 Boeing 737 aircraft from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, according to media reports from the Australian Financial Review.

VietJet currently connects routes from Australia to Vietnam with direct flights operating out of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide to Ho Chi Minh City.

The company had previously consolidated all Australian flights through Ho Chi Minh City late last year.

Speaking in March 2024 ahead of the-then Melbourne-Hanoi launch, Vietjet vice president Nguyen Thi Thuy Binh had said the airline was “excited” to link Australia with the Vietnamese capital.

“It reaffirms our commitment to offer all Australians and tourists alike with unparalleled opportunities to enjoy unique experiences to a myriad of captivating destinations across Vietnam,” she said.

“We anticipate that this new service will serve as a catalyst, fostering enhanced tourism and economic cooperation between the two nations.”
