Jetstar’s first flight from Brisbane has touched down in Queenstown, providing a new seasonal trans-Tasman link between Queensland and the South Island.

The inaugural JQ195 service from Brisbane arrived in Queenstown at 12:40pm Monday aboard A320-200 VH-VFH, marking the beginning of a route that will run three times per week until October. It is Jetstar’s fourth direct trans-Tasman route launch in under a year.

“Today’s first flight is a great moment for Queenstown and for travellers on both sides of the Tasman,” said Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully.

“New Zealanders now have a direct, low-fare route to Queensland’s main gateway, whether that’s for a sunny family holiday, long weekend, or a smooth connection to our expansive Asia network. And Australians can explore Queenstown and the wider South Island more easily than ever before.

“This is part of our biggest trans-Tasman expansion yet, and we’re proud to be deepening the connection between these two incredible destinations.”

According to Queenstown Airport CEO Shane O’Hare, the new service shows “strong demand in both directions for a direct, low-fares link between Queensland and New Zealand’s alpine south”.

“This new service creates a great new option for local travellers, while making it even easier for Australians to visit us,” he said.

“Strong demand for the inaugural flight shows just how valuable this connection is, and we’re excited to see it take off over the winter season.”

The launch of Jetstar’s service comes as Brisbane Airport expects more than 2.3 million passengers over the upcoming winter school holidays, with CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff tipping high demand at the international terminal.

“There is always a real sense of excitement in the terminals during school holidays and we’re looking forward to welcoming thousands of passengers who are travelling for a well-earned break,” he said.

“New Zealand is proving incredibly popular with Queenslanders this winter, and there are still plenty of travellers heading away for a European summer too.

“Inbound passengers are also flocking to Queensland for a dose of magnificent sunny winter weather, which is great for tourism operators across the state.”

Brisbane-Queenstown is also served by Qantas and Virgin Australia, with Air New Zealand to begin seasonal flights next week. Jetstar will also launch a Perth-Christchurch service in October.
