Brisbane Airport has been hit by disruptions after an overheating air conditioner triggered the partial evacuation of its international terminal.

Several flights on Tuesday morning were delayed, including Qantas, Korean Airlines and Singapore Airlines services, and hundreds of passengers were moved outside in a “precautionary evacuation” after smoke from the air conditioning unit tripped fire alarms.

“Shortly after 8am, the testing of an air conditioning unit’s heating element created a small amount of smoke which activated the fire alarm,” the airport said on its website.

“All passengers on Level 4 of the terminal were evacuated, causing delays for some departing international flights, and traffic congestion around the precinct.

“Passengers have now returned to the terminal, and processing is being prioritised based on flight schedules. Brisbane Airport apologises for delays as a result of this morning’s evacuation. There is no impact to operations at the Domestic Terminal.”

Level 4 at Brisbane Airport houses the check-in areas and airport lounges, as well as a new security screening point opened last month as part of a massive overhaul.

The renovations include security and passport control being relocated from level three to a “light-filled atrium” on level four, self-service check-in and bag drops installed, baggage systems upgraded, and retail offerings expanded, including a doubling in size of the duty-free area.
