Vietnamese low-cost carrier Vietjet will launch flights between Sydney and Hanoi later this year.

Launching on 8 June, the new twice-weekly service will be Vietjet’s seventh route connecting Australia to Vietnam, and comes after the announcement of Melbourne–Hanoi earlier this month, the first Vietjet service connecting Australia to the Vietnamese capital.

The 10-hour flights from Hanoi to Sydney will depart on Wednesdays and Saturdays, returning on Thursdays and Sundays.

“We’re thrilled that Vietjet is expanding its network through Sydney announcing twice-weekly flights to Hanoi, a much sought-after and popular destination,” said Rob Wood, executive general manager of aviation at Sydney Airport.

“The demand for travel to Vietnam remains high and this new offering will deliver great value and choice for customers, further bolstering the airport’s connectivity to the region.”

According to Vietjet, the carrier currently operates the largest proportion of flights between Australia and Vietnam at 48 per cent seat capacity, above Vietnam Airlines at 40 per cent and Jetstar at 12 per cent.

“Vietjet’s recent introduction of its Sydney-Hanoi and Melbourne-Hanoi routes reflect its outstanding 2023 business performance, which saw the airline complete 133,000 flights with 25.3 million passengers onboard (excluding Vietjet Thailand) – of which more than 7.6 million were on international flights,” the airline said.

“In 2023 alone, Vietjet continued to grow its flight network with 33 new international and domestic routes, including the five new routes in Australia (Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney), bringing the total number of routes to 125, including 80 international and 45 domestic routes.”

Vietjet in April last year became Sydney’s fiftieth concurrent airline when it launched services to Ho Chi Minh City, breaking pre-pandemic records.

Melbourne, meanwhile is the first Australian destination served by Vietjet to Hanoi, with flights starting 3-4 June, while Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide also have Vietjet services to Ho Chi Minh City.

The low-cost carrier introduced daily flights from Melbourne and Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City in December, having commenced its service to Melbourne three times per week on Easter Sunday 2023, and began flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Adelaide via Perth in November.

Full-service carrier Vietnam Airlines also flies from Hanoi to Melbourne and Sydney, with Melbourne–Hanoi flights commencing last June.
