Vietnamese low-cost carrier Vietjet will increase Australian services from 26 to 48 per week as of December.

Vietjet will fly daily from Ho Chi Minh City to Melbourne and Sydney starting 1 December, and five times per week between Ho Chi Minh City and Brisbane starting 16 December. This follows last month’s announcement of five weekly flights to Perth and Adelaide starting 21 November.

The expansion will make Vietjet the largest airline operator between Australia and Vietnam.

“Vietjet continues to increase its flight frequency to meet the high demand for travel between Australia and Vietnam, particularly during the upcoming year-end holidays,” the airline said in a press release.

“This move reflects the company’s optimistic performance and outlook in the market, as well as its unwavering dedication to delivering on its promise of providing Australians with excellent travel options at affordable prices.

“Vietjet remains steadfast in its commitment to providing safe and reliable flights, and eagerly anticipates welcoming more Australian travellers on board in the near future.”

The news follows the apparent exit of fellow Vietnamese airline Bamboo Airlines from Australia last month.

The carrier posted a statement on its website hinting it was set to cut the frequency of some under-perming routes, while its local sales manager claimed on LinkedIn that all ANZ staff had been made redundant.

Bamboo first launched a service between Sydney and Ho Chi Minh at the end of March 2022, taking on Jetstar and Vietnam Airlines. It also began flying from Melbourne to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh.

“Bamboo Airways has improved commercial efficiency by reducing the frequency of a number of inefficient routes with low passenger demand while increasing operation on routes recording high demand,” the business said in a statement.
