Australian airports’ immigration gates have switched on a major upgrade to their fingerprint and facial recognition software.

The new ‘Enterprise Biometric Identification Services’ system is specially designed to identify travellers who change names or obtain fake passports using false identities.

It’s hoped the upgrade, the biggest in 12 years, will allow the Australian Department of Home Affairs to cope with an anticipated increase in visa applications, border clearances and citizenship applications over the next 10 years.

Rick Mayhew, vice president of software creators Unisys Asia Pacific, said, “The long-term growth in the volume of travellers that will hopefully return after COVID-19, as well as the increased risk of potential terrorist or fraudulent activity, means that effective border security is more important than ever.”

In 2019, there were 9.5 million visitors to Australia, 3.9 million more than 10 years earlier and 220,300 more than the previous year.

The new system, created bespoke for Australia in 18 months, can handle more than 100,000 transactions daily and scan through 100 million records.

More than 240 governments around the world use a similar system by Unisys.

So does this mean that Australian Citizens will be fingerprinted each time leave/enter the country?

Overall I’m not against it. If it stops those leaving with warrants out for their arrest or running from courts for one reason or another then on the whole it’s a positive thing. Would also help track those going to join ISIS and the like.

  • This this good for the security purpose. Keep the good work up!!
