In an impressive display of airmanship, RAAF F-111C A8-143 from 1 Squadron crewed by pilot FLGOFF Peter Komar and navigator FLTLT Luke Warner made an arrested belly landing at RAAF Amberley after losing the left main wheel after takeoff. After the tail hook engaged the arresting cable the aircraft came to rest in a distance of about 500m.
Boeing was awarded a US$780 million contract by the USAF on July 31 for the supply of four C-17 Globemaster III transports to Australia for the RAAF. The contract covers airframes only, with engines, electronic warfare systems, support or spares excluded. The aircraft will be sourced from aircraft built for the USAF in the current build program with deliveries expected in November 2006, May 2007 and January and February 2008.
