Ted Smith worked as a design engineer for Aero Commander. During 1966 Smith left Aero Commander to set up his own aircraft manufacturing company to produce the Aerostar, mid-wing, twin-engine, six-seater with retractable undercarriage and two 160hp (120kW) Lycoming engines. The aircraft had a swept fin, a circular section fuselage and a main airstair door ahead of the wing. The prototype first flew during November 1966 as the Model 360, however, after several design updates the first production aircraft were Model 600s fitted with two 290hp (215kW) Lycomings.

The type was moderately successful but unfortunately capital was an ongoing issue. In June 1968 the company was acquired by American Cement and a year later by Butler Aviation which had also bought Mooney and intended to combine production to the Mooney facility at Kerrville, Texas.

This in fact never happened and two years later Ted Smith bought back the design and production rights and introduced the 601P pressurised model and the 700 Superstar. On April 28 1978 Piper Aircraft acquired the Aerostar line and built the 600A, 601B and 601P until the last Piper Aerostar was produced in 1984. Including prototypes Ted Smith, in all its guises, built 914 Aerostars, with Piper adding a further 153 aircraft for a total of 1,067.

Whitsunday Air Services has added a third amphibious DHC-2 Beaver to its impressive fleet of 12 Robinson R44s, two Airbus Helicopters EC120s, two Bell LongRangers and a single Airbus Helicopters EC120, EC130, GippsAero Airvan and Cessna Caravan on floats.

The latest Beaver was delivered new to Hawker Siddeley (New Zealand) during April 1965 and had its first flight after assembly two months later. It was officially registered ZK-CMU on July 23 1965, was fitted with a hopper and went straight to work spraying and spreading with Fieldair at Palmerston North. After almost 20 years the aircraft was eventually retired and stored, dismantled, at Gisborne during October 1984. Six years later it was rebuilt as a floatplane and went to Float Air which operated it from its Picton base on tourist scenic flights and charters for a further 13 years.

Frank Wright of Tauranga acquired the, by now elderly, Beaver during May 1996 and after a complete overhaul sold it to Barnstormer Classic Aviation at Fairfield, Connecticut which registered it N97FW one year later. In May last year it was noted at Kenmore Air’s Kenmore Harbour maintenance facility in Washington State being prepared for export to Australia.

Ian Bell at Tumbarumba, NSW has acquired the Transavia PL12 Airtruk LDH, which was revoked by CASA during July 2006, and put it back on the register as TZV.

The Airtruk was the brainchild of Luigi Pellarini who wanted to design an aerial sprayer that flew rather than an aircraft that sprayed crops. The result was a rather odd looking aircraft that was basically a chemical hopper with wings, a cockpit mounted on top providing an excellent view, an engine in the front and a small compartment behind for up to two ground crew. The design incorporated two smaller stub wings below the main wing to support the wing braces and fixed undercarriage as well as twin tail booms attached to the upper wing to allow the loading vehicle to drive between them for easier loading of the hopper.

The original PL7 Tanker was powered by a Cheetah engine, but this was later replaced by a Pratt & Whitney Wasp radial and for production PL12 aircraft a 285hp (212kW) Continental was fitted. This turned out to be less than adequate and the Airtruk was quickly upgraded to 300hp (225kW).

Ian Bell’s Airtruk was the 105th of 117 aircraft built and first flew from Transavia’s Seven Hills factory near Sydney during 1980. It has lived in Albury, NSW all its life until obtained by Ian Bell.

Nineteen aircraft are shown in the Deletions section this issue and, thankfully, for the first time in a long while, there are no cancellations due to accidents. As usual around half of the entries are exports with America being the favoured destination but Mauritius, China and Pakistan also get a mention.

Beech Super King Air 350s JEA and WJW are now in the US with the former now N361MM and currently being advertised for sale by Ogarajets at Atlanta, Georgia as a low-time airframe with new paint and interior. WJW, meanwhile, is with West Coast Aircraft Sales at Santa Ana, California and is marked as N741WC.

The last Qantas passenger Boeing 767-300ER, OGH, has been registered N377CM after being stored at Victorville, California since June 2014. The aircraft will be converted to a freighter by Cargo Aircraft Management at Wilmington, Ohio and will be the last of 13 Qantas 767s that have been converted by the company. The only 767 that remains on the local register is the Express Freighters/Qantas Freight EFR.

Also now in the USA is Pearl Aviation Australia’s Beech Super King Air TLX which has been cancelled, but the subsequent details are not known as we went to press.

Sounds Air Travel and Tourism at Blenheim, New Zealand has imported another RFDS Pilatus PC-12 to add to its fleet of three PC-12s and five Cessna 208 Caravans. The latest aircraft is NWO from the RFDS Western Australian section in Perth and it joins two others from the RFDS and one leased from V8 racing driver Todd Kelly.

Extremely rare Hawker Fury SFW has returned to the UK after a little over five years on the local register. The aircraft has been registered in Germany, France and the US before coming to Australia, but each time it returned to its UK markings of G-CBEL between each overseas trip. It is therefore expected to become G-CBEL again on its return to the UK.

Beech Super King Air KMS has been exported to Canada and Beech 1900Ds XDY and YOA have gone to Mauritius and Pakistan respectively. XNN is the first GippsAero Airvan to be exported to China and is now flying as B-10HD. With a massive GA market opening up in China it is hoped that there will be many more GippsAero products heading that way in the future.

Sonex ZSW, Viking Dragonfly PGV, Jabiru J160 CLO and Cessna Skycatcher VVN have all been transferred to the RA-Aus register, and with the Jabiru being registered 24-8122 between May 2012 and February 2015 before coming onto the CASA register it is likely that it will return to that marking. The Skycatcher is one of 14 imported during 2011/12 when Cessna was trying to break into the LSA market.

Two aircraft have been withdrawn from use including BAe Jetstream OAE. The aircraft had been part of the De Bruin Air (nee O’Connor Airlines) fleet but was taken out of service and stripped of useful parts during January 2007 with the fuselage being stored at the O’Connor warehouse in Mount Gambier, South Australia since then.
