Members of Virgin Australia’s frequent flyer program Velocity keen to use their points while keeping their feet on the ground will be able to cash in their points for fuel under a new initiative with BP.

Since April 2015, Velocity members have been able to earn points for fuel and in-store purchases at participating BP outlets around Australia by swiping their membership card.

The partnership between BP and Velocity has now been expanded to allow members to use points to cover their fuel or in-store purchases at a rate of 1,667 points for $10.

BP General Manager for marketing and offer development Adam Arnold said: “The cost of fuel is a significant household expense, and we want to help reduce the impact on household budgets by opening up more ways to pay, thanks to our partnership with Velocity Frequent Flyer.”

Velocity chief executive Karl Schuster said about one million members had earned points from BP purchases so far and he hoped this latest initiative would also prove popular with the six million members of the program.

“Velocity is committed to rewarding our members on their everyday expenditure, and this initiative with BP takes that one step further,” Schuster said in a statement.

“We know some members drive much more than they fly, so this gives them an alternative way to use their points that will ease the pressure on their wallet.”
