Jetstar has opened a new cabin crew base in Perth, alongside a purpose-built Qantas Group Emergency Procedures Training Centre.

Launching this month with 40 cabin crew, the base is planned to expand to 90 local roles as Jetstar looks to expand its flights from Perth, including the new Christchurch service to launch on 27 October; Jetstar is also planning to increase Perth-Melbourne flights over the summer peak.

“Western Australia is one of the Qantas Group’s most important growth markets, and over the coming years Perth is set to become our second-largest international gateway after Sydney,” said Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson.

“We’re backing that growth with more local jobs, new aircraft, additional flights and investment in world-class training facilities.

“The new Jetstar cabin crew base is an important investment in our people and in our growing operations in Western Australia. It will create long-term local employment opportunities while supporting Jetstar’s expanding network from Perth.”

Alongside the Jetstar base, the new training centre includes both classroom and hands-on learning facilities such as door trainers, virtual reality trainers, an A321 narrow-body trainer, and escape slides and rafts; an E190 trainer will be installed early next year.

“Our new Emergency Procedures Training Centre will also play a critical role in supporting growth across Qantas, QantasLink and Jetstar in the West, giving our crew access to high-quality, hands-on training locally rather than travelling East,” said Hudson.

WA Premier Roger Cook welcomed the opening of the new Qantas facilities, saying they will create new local jobs and opportunities.

“The opening of the Qantas Group Emergency Procedures Training Centre and new Jetstar crew base in Perth is fantastic for Western Australia, as it will strengthen local training capability and create skilled job opportunities for Western Australians,” he said.

“Perth is making its mark as an important hub for aviation, tourism, and trade, and partnerships like this help position Western Australia as a key strategic gateway.”

The news comes as QantasLink subsidiary Network Aviation introduces its midlife Embraer E190s into service to replace its aging Fokker fleet, as well as refitting 19 Perth-based QantasLink A320s with refreshed cabins and on-board wi-fi.
