Qantas has boosted its frequent flyer offering for travellers to North America with an expanded partnership with Canadian airline Westjet.

Under the new arrangement, announced on Wednesday, members of Qantas’s frequent flyer program can earn points when travelling on any Westjet flight from May 25 onwards.

Members of the Qantas program can also redeem points for Qantas codeshare flights operated by Westjet.

The airline said it hoped to be able to offer its frequent flyer members the ability to use points to redeem any flight on the Westjet network by 2017.

Qantas has placed its QF airline code on about 20 Westjet routes in North America since 2014.

“Not surprisingly, travel is the number one interest of Qantas Frequent Flyers so we know our members will be excited about being able to earn and use their points when travelling with WestJet,” Qantas Loyalty chief executive Lesley Grant said in a statement.

Members of the Westjet Rewards frequent flyer program will also be able to earn Westjet Dollars on any Qantas flight from May 25.

“This will be a significant improvement to our reward program value proposition,” WestJet executive vice-president for commercial Bob Cummings said.

“We are confident that our members are going to love earning WestJet dollars while flying on the Qantas global network, and we are equally excited to welcome Qantas frequent flyers aboard and offer them a new opportunity to earn Qantas Points everywhere WestJet flies.”
