Melbourne Airport has unveiled a number of concept images for a proposed upgrade to the international terminal at Tullamarine.
The concept images of a revamped T2 were shown to an audience of about 700 at Melbourne Airport’s annual stakeholder meeting at Melbourne Town Hall on September 15.
“Our international terminal will be the centrepiece of our physical and customer experience transformation,” Melbourne Airport chief executive Chris Woodruff said at the meeting.
“As you can see we are planning more gates, more space and more retail outlets and this is just the beginning.
“By the time we are finished it will be clear to passengers from the moment they step off the plane that they have arrived in Australia and more specifically in Melbourne.
“We are also creating more lounges for our airlines and a better environment for our transit passengers.”
Capital expenditure at Melbourne Airport – which opened in 1970 and whose exterior has been largely untouched since – was $420 million in 2013/14.
Spending on capital works was forecast to reach to $700 million in 2014/15 as the airport completed construction on a new terminal, T4, for Jetstar, Tigerair Australia and Rex, finished 21 new aircraft parking bays and a new transport hub to open in 2015, in addition to more retail space and upgrades to parking.
Also, construction works were underway for expansion within the arrivals area of the international terminal, offering more space for customs, quarantine and immigration.
There was also a new elevated road being built to make it easier for those driving to the airport to pick up or drop off passengers, Woodruff said.
“This will be another record year of investment for another year of transformation,” Woodruff said.
There was also a new business park with warehouse and logistics facilities for TNT, Toll Group and DHL, as well as a new hotel and apartment facility.
