Navy prepares for the MH-60R Romeo
The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has taken its first tentative step towards induction of the Sikorsky/Lockheed Martin MH-60R ‘Romeo’ helicopter into its ranks, following the deployment of the first cadre of maintenance and aircrew personnel to the US to commence training on the new aircraft.
The ‘60 Romeo’ as it is commonly referred to within the project team, 24 of which have been ordered for the RAN to replace the S-70B-2 Seahawk ‘classic’ and the cancelled SH-2G(A) Seasprite, is the latest version of the venerable Seahawk. The MH-60R was selected by the ADF ahead of the competing NH Industries NH 90 NFH in 2011 under Phase 8 of the ADF’s comprehensive AIR 9000 rotary wing project.
