Integrated ATM
The joint civil-military Air Traffic Management project
Recently, Airservices and Defence signed an operating level agreement to formalise arrangements between the two organisations to jointly procure and maintain a new air traffic management (ATM) system for Australia. It ensures that a single RFT and single contracts for acquisition and support of the ATM system will be issued to the market.
The release of aviation policy papers in 2009 documented a government view that considerable organisational and operational benefits could arise through collaboration between Airservices and the RAAF. Most significantly, both organisations have ATM systems that will exceed their originally planned operational life of about 15 years and are due for replacement. This provides a generational opportunity for the organisations to align their ATM systems, as well as pursue other areas of harmonisation. A common ATM technology platform is fundamental to the attainment of wider benefits.
