A stable approach
AIr traffic management in Australia enters a critical phase
There is a strong confluence of change emerging around nearly every facet of air traffic management in Australia. From new technologies to improve efficiencies within the 51.7 million square kilometres of the Australian Flight Information Region (FIR) to emerging strategies under new leadership, Airservices Australia’s agenda for the next eight years will not only be intense, but have far-reaching implications for the way air navigation services are delivered.
As the TAAATS air traffic management (ATM) system, commissioned in 2000, comes within sight of the end of its useful economic life, development of Australia’s future airspace management system is gearing up. The development of what Airservices calls the ATC Future System (AFS) jointly with the RAAF will break new ground in both the relationship between Australia’s two ATM providers and in terms of the efficiencies both organisations stand to derive from a harmonised system.
