Three new types are listed in this month’s New Allocations section, an Embraer ERJ-135 Legacy, a Dynali helicopter and an Evektor Harmony.

Jetgo Australia’s ERJ-135 JTG is to be based in Brisbane and used on FIFO contracts around Queensland. It is the first ERJ-135LR regional jet in Australia although an ERJ- 135-based Legacy 600 is operating in this country, fitted out with an executive interior. The ERJ-135 is a smaller version of the ERJ-145 developed from the Brasilia and earlier very successful Bandeirante models.

The ERJ-145 was launched at the 1989 Paris Airshow and is basically a stretched Brasilia fitted with rear-mounted turbofan engines. The ERJ-145 (50 pax) became a family when the ERJ-135 (37 pax), ERJ-140 (44 pax) and the Legacy business jet were developed. The ERJ range is very popular in the US, where a number of smaller commuter airlines have a mixed fleet of ERJ-135ER and LRs together with ERJ-145EP, LR and XRs.

Shared type ratings allow operators to use individual pilots for any ERJ type in the fleet. There are over 1,000 ERJs operating worldwide and Embraer claims there have been no reported crashes due to mechanical failure in over 15 million hours of flight time for the type.

Darren Bell’s Dynali H2S, BBT, is a light two-seat helicopter with a tubular stainless steel airframe, fully enclosed cockpit and tubular aluminium landing skids and tail boom. The standard H2 model is powered by a 130hp (97kW)Rotax 914 engine while Darren’s machine, the H2S model, is fitted with a 180hp (135kW) 2. 5-litre four-cylinder horizontally opposed Subaru DS25. Darren spent three weeks in the Dynali factory in Belgium building, under supervision, more than 50 per cent of the kit helicopter to classify it as an amateur-built aircraft.

Dynali was founded during the early 1980s by Jacques Tonet who designed a threean area famous for aircraft manufacture since 1936. LET, Morava and Zlin all have had aircraft factories in the area employing local engineers, so there was no shortage of skilled labour when Evektor began production of motor gliders and gyrocopters as well as a maintenance facility for Czech general aviation aircraft.

Production of ultralight aircraft began in 1996 when the P220 Koala went into production and a year later the first SportStar flew. The four-seat single-engined Cobra was released during 2004 although none of these have found their way to Australia. Evektor is working on a twin-engine turboprop, the Outback, which made its first flight last year.

Air Warrnambool’s Evektor Harmony EVU is the latest model from the Czech Republic manufacturer and although based on the very successful SportStar the new model has had a major redesign of the fuselage, wing and tailplane to improve performance and handling.

Larger ailerons and rudder along with more streamlined fairings add to the overall result while the cabin has been updated and now has electrically boosted ventilation. As with all the SportStars the Harmony has all metal joints masticbonded as well as riveted for extra strength and all hollow rivets are filled before etchprimer corrosion proofing and painting. The name Harmony is a tribute to the original testbed for the SportStar, also called the Harmony.

Evektor was formed in 1970 in Kunovice, Czech Republic, The only aircraft Returning to the Register this month is Luscombe Silvaire LUA, repaired after being damaged at Coldstream, Victoria last November.

Virgin Boeing 737s VBH, VBM and VOB have been returned to their respective lessors with VOB destined for Jeju Air at Seoul, South Korea. VOB is Jeju Air’s ninth 737-800 and will join the company network which links South Korea with Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand and the Philippines. The Oxford Aviation Academy has disposed of two more of its Cessna 182Ts, EUX and EWV, to the UK. Robinson Raven HBA has found a new home in New Zealand with the Raven now flying with Platinum Corporation, Auckland marked as ZK-IAN and becoming the third helicopter to carry these markings. UQA is the second Bandeirante to depart these shores for Air Rarotonga, Cook Islands in recent months and Pel-Air has sent another of its Metro 23s, KAN, to Canada leaving only KDO to go.

Four aircraft have been deleted due to accidents including Schweizer 269C FUJ, returning to base after a crop spraying sortie when the engine lost power and it was forced to land in a field. The pilot escaped injury but the helicopter caught fire and was destroyed. Cessna Agtruck SHM came to grief after it failed to become airborne and hit a dirt mound at the end of a temporary strip while on spraying duties near St George, Queensland. The pilot was seriously injured. Pitts Special RDW was destroyed when it failed to recover from a low-level aerobatic manoeuvre at Murray Bridge, SA in January, causing the death of well-known aerobatic pilot Robert Morgan.
