Register Review

This month’s New Allocations seem to be dominated by airliners with two new Airbus A330s and two A380s for Qantas, three A320s for Jetstar and an A320 for Tiger.

The RFDS has two new Beech Kings Airs on line in Brisbane replacing older aircraft and another PC-12 has been delivered to Adelaide, also replacing an older model. Two Spitfire replicas are also shown from the Brisbane based Supermarine Aircraft factory and there are another four new types in the listing this issue.

The Temora Aviation Museum chief engineer Peter Pring-Shambler is shown as the operator of CQE, the first MXR to be seen on the local register.

A single-seat MXS-R model, it is the same aircraft that Matt Hall used in the Red Bull Air Races in 2009 and 2010.

The North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, based MX Aircraft was founded in 2001 specifically to build aerobatic monoplanes, and the prototype MX2 first flew during 2003. The initial production aircraft made its public debut at the first race of the Red Bull Air Race 2006 season at Abu Dhabi in the hands of Michael Goulian. Since then seven different pilots have chosen to compete in the MXR and the type has participated in the event every year since 2006.

The MX2 two-seater and MXS single seat machines are fully composite and use Toray carbon fibre. The aircraft is powered by a 340hp (254kW) Lycoming AEIO-450 and is stressed to an incredible +/-14G.

Lindsay Fox has replaced his 2008 Agusta A109S Grand with a brand new AW109SP GrandNew, the very latest model from the Anglo-Italian company. Count Giovanni Agusta first flew an aeroplane in 1907 and formed an aviation company bearing his name in 1923. During 1952 Agusta began manufacturing Bell helicopters under licence and several Agusta-Bell 47s and 206s are still flying today.

Agusta also had agreements with Sikorsky, Hughes and McDonnell Douglas to licence build their products before designing and building their own helicopters. Several early attempts resulted in only moderate success until the 1970s when the A109 was released.

Undoubtedly the most popular helicopter built by Agusta, the A109 has been developed through several stages over the past 40 years including military, VIP, SAR, medevac, law enforcement and offshore support versions. In July 2000, Agusta owners Finmeccanica and GKN-Westland merged their respective helicopter operations to form Agusta Westland, and the AW109SP designation now reflects this merger.

The AW109SP is capable of single pilot IFR operations and is powered by twin 735shp Pratt & Whitney Canada PW207C engines with FADEC. A digital glass cockpit and 4-axis duplex autopilot is fitted which includes a helicopter terrain awareness and warning system, providing a detailed terrain following map and a pilot alert when hazardous terrain or conditions are detected. The VIP layout allows for up to seven passengers and the helicopter cruises at 156kt with a service ceiling of 16000ft and a 785km range.

The Linfox Property Group has reregistered its older A109 FBX in order for their new acquisition to become FOX, and it becomes the ninth aircraft to display these markings and the fifth Fox helicopter.

Gojet’s appropriately registered Phenom 100 PNM is the third new type in this month’s listing and is the latest bizjet offering from Brazilian manufacturer Embraer. During 2005 Embraer launched the Phenom very light jet to complement its Legacy and Lineage larger bizjets, and selected BMW to design the interior and Garmin to supply the integrated avionics for the aircraft.

June 2007 saw the official roll out of the first Phenom at the Embraer production facility at São José dos Campos with the maiden flight taking place the following month.

Type certification in Brazil andthe US was finalised during December 2008 with the first deliveries the same month.

The Phenom is fitted with two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW617F-E turbofan engines providing a maximum speed of 722 km/h, a range of over 2000km and a service ceiling of 41,000ft. The aircraft is operated in single pilot configuration and can accommodate up to six passengers.

The fourth new type shown in the listing, Bill Coote’s Sooper Coot WID, is at the other end of the price and comfort range to the Embraer Phenom, being an amateur built two-seat amphibian of predominantly wooden construction.

Designed by American Moult Taylor, after his famous flying car designs did not progress to flying status, the original Coot Model A first flew in 1971 fitted with a 120hp (90kW) Franklin engine. The Coot was later offered as plans to amateur builders with the uprated 180hp (135kW) Franklin engine recommended. The Coot was unusual as it featured a low wing whereas most seaplane designers aim to keep the wings as far from the water as possible.

Taylor’s design enabled the wing roots to act as sponsons for better performance in rough water and to utilise the ground effect during takeoff. The design also did away with drag producing wingtip floats. The Coot features retractable tri-cycle landing gear and folding wings for easy storage.

Bill began work on his Coot almost three years ago and as work progressed an unfinished Coot became available in New Zealand. Bill obtained the project and was able to incorporate many of the metal fittings in his own aircraft as these are the most complicated to manufacture.

The Coot is expected to fly within 12 months and will be fitted with a 2. 5 litre Subaru WRX horizontally opposed engine. Bill has had experience with the Subaru Liberty engine which he fitted to an earlier Jodel that he built and was pleased with the result, so decided to stick with what he knew when selecting an engine for the Coot. Not content to leave things as they are, Bill is planning to fit the cylinder heads from a 2. 0 WRX to the 2. 5 engine to increase the compression ratio and will retain the single ignition system from the car engine.

Twenty-four aircraft are shown in the Deletions section this issue with one third of these being reregistered for various reasons – mostly to allow other aircraft to reuse the markings. Exports account for a further third of the deletions, with the most interesting being Eurocopter EC145 going to Kazakhstan. It will certainly be a challenge finding out its subsequent registration.

Three accidents are noted, including the demise of Transavia Airtruk TTV at Marden during March last year. Thankfully the pilot was uninjured in the crash, but the number of Airtruks now airworthy in Australia has been reduced to eight from more than 100 built at Transavia’s factory at Seven Hills near Sydney.

The Airtruk is an iconic Australian built aircraft and some years ago Transavia obtained the first production aircraft, TRN, rebuilt it and presented it to the Power House Museum in Sydney where it is now on display. The Airtruk was also favoured by ag operators in New Zealand and, although there are none still flying across the Tasman, Arthur Ruddendlau has a fine collection of parts which he is building into a complete and flyable aircraft.
