Qantas Flight Planning
Keeping an Airline Aloft – An Overview of Qantas Flight Planning and Despatch Procedures
I am certain that most passengers, as they board their aircraft for that long awaited overseas holiday or business trip, do not give a thought to the question of flight planning, confident that Qantas (or whatever airline) will get them safely to their destination. The technicalities of getting a 747 from say Sydney to London are for the Captain; of greater importance is wondering when the drinks will be served, and breaking open the duty free purchases.
Having flown with Qantas on a number of occasions over the years (starting in 1963 with a trip to the US in a 707), on each occasion, as a curious pilot, I have thought about the factors involved in getting from A to B and wished that I could have an insight into the company’s procedures for flight planning, including briefing of captains and crew members.
My curiosity has been heightened by my coming from a military aviation background, where “the briefing” for a mission has always been of major importance. I can recall one occasion of a two squadron combined weapons mission where the briefing was twice as long as the actual mission and the debrief almost as long! Of course the main reason for those lengthy military briefings is that each mission is usually different and generally other aircraft are involved.
