FIGHTER NIGHTS – 456 Squadron RAAF: John Bennett Fighter Nights is the story of the only Australian WW2 night fighter squadron and is a fitting tribute to the men and machines of this unique RAAF unit. Fighter Nights details the background to the development and roles of the night fighter, backgrounds radar development, and then traces the history of 456 Squadron from formation through to its operations of Boulton Paul Defiants and then radar-equipped Bristol Beauforts and later de Havilland Mosquitos. The book well covers 456’s night intercepts of German bomber and later V-1 flying bombs, plus bomber support missions (mounting standing patrols over German airfields to destroy German night fighters before they could intercept RAF bombers). Appendices detail aircraft types, aircraft serials (including fates), an honour roll and claims against German aircraft and V-1s. Fighter Nights is meticulously researched, easy to read and well illustrated and presented. A-4 SKYHAWK – THE VIDEO: This 82min video was produced to celebrate the RNZAF’s 25th anniversary of Skyhawk operations and as such is a comprehensive look at the Skyhawk in New Zealand service. This is perhaps the definitive video of the Skyhawk from the New Zealand perspective. This video describes the Skyhawk’s development and technical features, the RNZAF’s evaluation and selection of the Skyhawk in the late 1960s, its delivery and entry into service in the 1970s, and its subsequent service career and mid 1980s Kahu upgrade, which has resulted in one of the most advanced light attack aircraft in the world. Features of the video include some excellent McDonnell Douglas and RNZAF historical footage (plus other interesting footage such as refuelling from RAAF 707 tankers), and interviews with various RNZAF personnel who have been involved with Skyhawk operations. A-4 Skyhawk is well produced and well worth its $39.95 purchase price if you’re interested in Kiwi Skyhawk ops. Available from Aviation Collectables, PO Box 444, Mundaring WA 6073, ph 1800 623 044, fax (09) 295 1105 for $39.95 plus $3.95 postage.
