The all new Learjet 45 successfully made its first flight on October 7 (32 years to the day from the first flight of the original Lear 23 in 1963). During the 2 hour 2 minute first flight the 45 reached an altitude of 26,000 feet and a speed of 300 knots (555 km/h). The Learjet 45 test programme will continue through next year, involving approximately 1250 hours of flight testing and five aircraft. Certification is anticipated for late 1996, with first deliveries in early 1997. (Bombardier)

Raytheon Wins Crash Lawsuit
Raytheon has achieved some good news for general aviation aircraft manufacturers following a California Supreme Court decision to uphold a lower court ruling which overturned a $US57m damages award based on the company and its insurer not acting in good faith by going to trial rather than settling an original lawsuit.
The case concerned the 1974 crash of a Beechcraft Travel Air light twin in California. The pilot and three passengers were killed when the aircraft stalled and crashed a few minutes after takeoff. Relatives of the three passengers filed suit and after winning a $US1.8m judgement against Raytheon they filed a second suit, claiming the company and its insurer had acted in bad faith by not settling the original lawsuit. A jury awarded the plaintiffs $US57m in punitive damages.
