TPC Reverses Qantas/BA Decision
The Trade Practices Commission (TPC) has reversed its earlier decision not to allow Qantas and British Airways to pool resources on the Kangaroo Route between Australia and the United Kingdom. The original decision was based on the anti-competitive aspects of the airlines’ Joint Services Agreement, and although they still exist in the TPC’s view, the decision was reversed following the airlines’ agreement to certain conditions including: increases in standard excursion economy fares (as used by about three-quarters of travellers on the route) will be kept below the consumer price index for three years; each airline will treat the other’s passengers as its own; discount fares on the route will be transferable between the two airlines; and combined discount fares on other (indirect) routes to Europe will be offered by both. These conditions satisfy the TPC that the public benefits outweigh the restrictive competition elements of the BA/Qantas agreement. The airlines are planning to introduce their joint services on the Kangaroo Route this October following the finalisation of some operational, regulatory and commercial details.
Saatchi Wins BA/Qantas Advertising
The New Saatchi advertising agency has won contracts to handle British Airways’ worldwide and Qantas’ international advertising accounts. New Saatchi was selected after pitches from other leading agencies were examined, Qantas deciding to follow BA’s decision to hire New Saatchi because of cost savings and other benefits including combined marketing. Qantas is 25% owned by BA. The background to the selection is the most interesting part of the story. New Saatchi is owned by Maurice Saatchi, one of the brothers behind the famous Saatchi & Saatchi agency which has held the BA account for 13 years and came up with the ‘World’s Favourite Airline’ slogan. Maurice was ousted from the original company in a boardroom coup last year and set up his own agency, New Saatchi, taking several key personnel with him. Saatchi & Saatchi was one of the losing bidders for the new Qantas and BA business along with J Walter Thompson and Bartle Bogle Hegarty. The Qantas domestic advertising account remains with local company Mojo.
