New Australian Airspace Classification System Nears

The long running saga of determining an appropriate airspace structure for Australia looks as though it is finally coming to an end. Details of the latest proposed Airspace Classification System which will be introduced in two steps, with an initial reclassification of Australian airspace to take place on December 7 this year, and a follow up on June 20 of next year, have been released by the CAA.

Historical Background

The history of the airspace saga goes back to 1990 when the CAA committed to reclassifying Australian airspace in accordance with ICAO classifications which are based on the level of Air Traffic Service provided. After extensive consultation with industry, the CAA proposed to introduce a new airspace system on November 11 1993 (refer p34 July ’93 AA). However, at the last moment, and after an extensive and costly education programme, some sections of the industry raised concerns about the safety of the proposed new system, leaving the CAA Board with little option but to defer its introduction until the points raised had been addressed.
