The Wright Brothers’ first flight at Kitty Hawk in 1903 could have been performed within the length of the 46m (150ft) main deck cabin of a 747. One wing is ten times heavier than the weight of Boeing’s first 1916 aircraft – the B&W Model 1 seaplane. Preparing a 747 to keep 400 people comfortable for 14 hours involves loading some 35,000 individual items, weighing in total about seven tonnes. Massive, powerful but by nature friendly … a gentle giant.
Stronger — Aiming For The Stars
Space shuttle Orbiter OV-101 Enterprise rolled out as long ago as September 1975. It had been intended to name it Constitution, but lobbying by fans of the film series Star Trek led to this change being made shortly before it first appeared. Enterprise has never been into space. Instead, it acted as a test vehicle for later craft.
