Early in the nineteen sixties, Boeing Commercial Airplane Co, the Boeing subsidiary responsible for civil transport aircraft, began studying the feasibility of producing a new generation large capacity jet airliner for long range heavy traffic routes. An investigating team visiting Europe, Japan and Australia to examine the needs of the airline industry, reported that air traffic was increasing by 15% per year and that future airliners would have to seat up to 375 passengers for the expected aircraft and airways congestion to be relieved. In order to have it ready by the mid 1970s, if not sooner, the time for designing a new generation large capacity airliner, perhaps a superjet, was at hand. Boeing decided to build something completely new – a much larger aircraft with a wide, cavernous fuselage. By doing this it was to usher in the new era of so-called “widebody” transports.
