The Beaufort Bogey
Laying To Rest The Beaufort Bogey
There has been a lot written recently about the Beaufort and a series of mysterious crashes in RAAF service. Various theories have been put forward to explain the tendency of the aircraft to dive into the ground from cruise flight, from sabotage to the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning of the pilot. There is, however, one man still alive who is certain he knows the cause, and recently he told the story to Australian Aviation of how he overcame the “Beaufort Bogey.”
RAAF Beauforts, both training and operationally, were regularly being lost in accidents from the time the type entered service. This was the case with all RAAF aircraft, but the Beaufort began to build a reputation for crashing without any explanation being able to be determined. Eventually, one was observed to leave level controlled flight and dive inexplicably into the ground.
