Trojans line up at Valleyfield for a sequential takeoff- this type of action was one of the highlights of the event and makes the crowds feel a part of the action even before it's begun.

A Glimpse of the Future?

Readers who noted our hot off the press Skyrace Tasmania report in the last issue might also have noticed that we felt the concept of pylon racing was a pretty viable way to spend one’s weekend.

Indeed it is not often that you go out and experience something completely new. Whether it be business or pleasure, to be honest most that we do from week to week is essentially recycled experiences. So when the Launceston based Tasmanian Aero Club mooted the idea of organising a fully fledged pylon racing meet around two years back it was not surprising that the general idea met with a fair deal of derision and skepticism. On the mainland it was sort of looked upon as one of those unfair Tasmanian jokes that surface at times like this. The joke though was in this case well and truly on those north of Bass Strait! I must admit that when AA first heard of the idea of running a major pylon race meet in far off Tassie, well, we approached it with all the uncommitted reserve that we hold for the majority of folk who want to dash out and start major airlines with less than the financial backing required to buy a new home. However, a quick brief from the Skyrace team and we were hooked. After all, it was to be held in Tassie, and that’s not half bad if you are like me and loathe heat and humidity! Anyway, from everybody we have spoken to the entire Skyrace event went off as a winner. Sure, it wasn’t without its first of type hiccups and we are sure these will be remedied next time, while compared with the utter farce that became the recent Surfers Paradise Indy race (before an international television audience) it went off like clockwork.
