Civil Register Update
Register Review
The new allocation section is made up of 43 aircraft this month, bringing the total number of aircraft registered by the CAA to 9433. Included are three new locally built Kavanagh Balloons, a type that has increased in popularity since The Great Across Australia Balloon Race, even though Dick Smith won the race in a foreign built balloon. Two more Rotorway Exec 90 kit helicopters make an appearance, KOC and COC. These bring the number of Exec 90s flying in Australia to five aircraft, with many more in different stages of completion throughout the country. Also the first four seat Robinson R44, ARG, has arrived in this country and the type promises to be as popular as the smaller two seat R22.
Once again amateur built aircraft are prominent in the listing including Volmer Sportsman AQO, the second of its type to fly in this country. The Sportsman is a two seat amphibian with a pusher engine mounted on a pylon on top of the wing behind the cockpit. The prototype was built by Volmer Jensen in the USA and was originally designed to use a second hand Aeronca or Champion wing and a 100hp Continental engine. The 100hp engine was considered by many builders to be too small for the aircraft especially for water takeoffs therefore larger engines were often fitted. The wing too became a prob- lem, especially outside America where Aeronca and Champion wings were not readily available so Jensen designed a new wing specifically for the Sportsman, in fact Australia’s original Volmer, TUB, was the first aircraft to fly in the world with a larger engine and the new wing design.
