Introduction of the aircraft here will for the first time provide fire authorities with a first strike capability, especially on hitherto inaccessible fires. If Canadian methods are adopted, AAEU aircraft will be directed onto inaccessible fires with the aim of suppression until ground units can take control.

the Best of the Past
– Preserving and Flying Aviation’s Fifty Year Legacy: Brian M Simcox This large book will no doubt appeal to the warbird enthusiast with its big air-to- air colour photos and takeoff to landing flight reports on the Stearman, Texan, Mustang and B-17. Having seen several of the restored warbirds presented in the book this reviewer can say that they look as good in the photographs as on the flightline.
The latter parts of the publication cover restoration and then preservation of the best of the past. Needless to say the book only looks at the US scene but that does not detract from its overall coverage. One can say that if it must have been enjoyable gathering material for this book and that feeling is brought out in the final presentation.

Boeing has reported earnings for 1993 of $US1. 24bn on revenue of $US25. 4bn. Ansett Transport Industries’ two owners have both posted profitable half yearly results. TNT posted its first profit for three years when it announced a $25. 5m profit for the six months ending December 31. News Limited recorded a $624. 9m profit for the same period. • Ansett itself recorded a profit for the six months ending December 31 of $129m.
British Airways profit for the quarter ending December 31 was $65m ($A136m) on turnover of $1. 54bn ($A3. 2bn). Northwest has reported a net loss of $US56. 3m and an operating profit of $US292. 4m for 1993 on revenue of $US8. 65bn. The airline reported a $10. 5m net profit for the quarter ending December 31 1993. Air New Zealand announced a $NZ88m profit for the December half year on $NZ1. 26 of revenue.
PEOPLE Movements at Qantas continue with Gordon Howlett formerly Chief Executive of Avis Australia taking on the newly created board position Executive General Manager National Operations, in charge of the carrier’s domestic operations. Geoff Dixon, former Ansett marketing director has been appointed Executive General Manager Marketing and Corporate Affairs. Sandra McPhee also a former Ansett employee has become Qantas’ Executive General Manager Sales. A third former Ansett executive Paul Edwards becomes Executive General Manager Pricing, Scheduling &p; Yield. A survivor of the old Qantas board, Julian Hercus has resigned, while another survivor, formerly deputy chief executive (operations) Ted Radford has had his position abolished, and will now head a new unit aimed at gaining third party maintenance and engineering work. After restructuring, Qantas state general managers now include John Anderson NSW; Wally Mariana Vic; Terry Simpson WA; Karin Eagles SA; Judy Watkins ACT, and Alan Williams Tas. Ansett meanwhile has promoted Paul Donovan to National Director Sales following Sandra McPhee’s resignation. Both The Concorde Group and Avro International Aerospace have appointed Tony Harrington’s Asia Pacific Public Relations as their PR representative in Australia and NZ, (and PNG and the Pacific for Avro). Air New Zealand has announced that David Beaston has taken over the position Manager Public Affairs. Ken Harris has been reappointed as a director of Australian Defence Industries for another three years. Leigh Masel has assumed the chairmanship of ASTA, an appointment lasting two years. SITA has named Russell Robertson as its new Regional Director of Sales &; Marketing Australasia and south Pacific. Tim Rothwell has joined the FAC as Manager Corporate Services Brisbane Airport. Terrence Swampillai has taken up his appointment as District Manager Northern Territory for Malaysia Airlines.
VALE – Lores Bonney died on February 23 aged 96. Vic Walton died after a long illness on February 22 aged 63.
