X Wing

 If you are feeling a bit “spaced out” after flying around the electronic airspace, X Wing might provide you with an interesting diversion for a month or so. This game is very popular with the younger set at the moment, and is modelled closely along the “Starwars” theme.

You get something of an idea about a game by watching the opening scenes as the programme loads. The familiar yellow text from Starwars scrolls away from you, disappearing into space. The Imperial cruisers pass majestically across the screen, followed by Tie fighters. Thus starts X Wing.

Games and simulator manufacturers must have realised that special boot discs are not popular, and this game, like several others I have seen lately, is well behaved from a computing point of view, operating within a normal PC environment without the need for special boot discs or memory arrangements. The game only needs DOS 3. 1 or higher, and will run on 286 machines. However, with the amount of processing going on, I think the recommendation to use a 386 or 486 based machine is sound. Speaking of sounds, this game has easily the best sound effects I have heard, and a sound card that is Soundblaster or Adlib compatible is highly recommended.
