More Black Hawks for Army?

The Australian Army Aviation Corp (AAAVN) may not get its long awaited follow-on Black Hawks till the end of the decade. The Army’s original complement of 39 S-70s was due to be supplemented by further follow-on orders, to provide the service with an additional infantry airlift capability. Perhaps the most likely scenario will see a further 10 helos delivered, which would not have the required full company lift capability, which would need 14 Black Hawks. Ideally, a full company group airlift capability would be preferred, which would need 23 additional Black Hawks.

At up to $18m each it is not likely that the extra airlift capability would be acquired for some years. To achieve savings to help fund the purchase the Army may consider the retirement of the UH-1H Iroquois, which currently does not have the range or performance for satisfactory operations in the north.
