Airlines and the aviation industry have attacked a Government proposal foranew levy of $NZ1. 50 for airline passengers. Ansett New Zealand says passengers on medium distance flights already pay an average of $NZ40 in GST (goods and services tax) and various aviation taxes.
The Civil Aviation Authority is considering the extra levy on domestic airline passengers to help it to overcome a $NZ5. 6m shortfall in its accounts for 1993/94. The Government claims the Aviation Industry Association is trying to “con” its way out of paying a fair share of the cost of the Authority.
