CAA ATC Training at Launceston

Since 1989 Air Traffic Control (ATC) training has been conducted for the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) by the University of Tasmania.

Launceston University’s Centre for Air Traffic Services is set for closure in early 1995 to be replaced by a new TAMTS-aligned facility in either Melbourne or Brisbane. However, will the prospective teachers of future ATC personnel be sufficiently qualified as instructors to ensure that the high standards presently achieved are maintained? Australian Aviation asks this question and finds that the answer is indeed a complex one.

A Centre for Air Traffic Services being established for this purpose within the School of Applied Science. The Centre, in collaboration with the CAA, trained all future ATC professionals via a two calendar year programme which lead to the award of a Diploma of Applied Science in Air Traffic Services. Since late 1992 the Centre has concentrated on short-term retraining for Flight Service Officers and Airways Data Systems Officers who would otherwise be deemed surplus to requirements and therefore offered redundancy.
