The Gr/pen prototype (pictured) unfortunately crashed on landing shortly into its test programme due to a fly-by-wire software failure. The prototype made its first flight on December 6 1988 and to date its crash was the only major setback in the type's development programme.
Update – Saab JAS 39 Gripen
Saab JAS 39 Gripen
The lightweight JAS 39 Gripen, the latest in a long line of distinguished Saab fighter designs has been bred under the most demanding requirements.
The design requirements stressed true multi role capability, operational flexibility, STOL performance and ease of maintenance. Encompassing all these features into an aircraft with an equipped takeoff weight of just eight tonnes and an entry into service date of the first half of this year, ahead of its European contemporaries in the Rafale and Eurofighter, is no small task. Yet Saab’s apparent success seems to indicate the soundness of the types design and bodes well for its operational future.
