The Tiger Moth was actually developed from the Gypsy Moth, incorporating staggered and sweptback wings and an inverted engine to allow an improved forward view for the crew. Approval to build the first 350 Australian built Tiger Moths was grantedto de Havilland at Mascot in October 1939. During the course of the war; one Tiger Moth was modified with old Wapiti and Demon racks. When delivered at low level, during trials, the ordnance proved quite accurate. In an emergency the aircraft were to operate from golf links, supported by drums of fuel and bombs at each site. However; with the arrival of large numbers of Kittyhawks the plan was abandoned.

Join the Navy and fly. So said the full page advertisement in the Melbourne Sun in the winter of 1947. Without giving it a second thought I applied, was selected, and 33 years later retired as the Commanding Officer of the Naval Air Station at Nowra.
In between those years I had the privilege of flying some 25 military aircraft; biplanes, singles, twins, one multi, jets, helicopters and a hovercraft if that can be called flying!
