• The avgas situation and high interest rates have badly affected the piston engine portion of the US aviation industry. Both Cessna and Piper took steps during April to suspend production for two to five weeks. In addition, retrenchments will affect 5,200 Piper and 1,500 Cessna workers with another 1,500 Cessna employees idle because of parts supply problems. It is expected that sales of GA piston engine aircraft will increase when credit eases, interest rates fall and the supply of avgas improves.
• Air New Zealand has decided to replace its DC-10 fleet with Boeing 747s powered by Rolls-Royce RB-211 engines and will join Cathay Pacific, Qantas, British Airways and Saudia as RB-211 powered Boeing 747 operators.
