Customs Win Impounded Aircraft Battle
The Collector of Customs has won his battle to prevent the sale of a Me 109 and P-51D Mustang aircraft. The two aircraft were impounded by Customs several years back when an attempt was made to export them from Australia. Since that time they have been stored in Sydney with a considerable amount of interest being paid to their ultimate fate. The two aircraft would conservatively be valued at more than a half million dollars on the international market.
The decision was handed down in favour of Customs on the 15th September in Sydney. The good news is that the Comptroller-General of Customs has advised Australian Aviation that the aircraft will remain in Australia. To this end, the Messerschmitt Me 109 will be donated to the Australian War Memorial for display purposes while the P-51D will go the RAAF Museum at Point Cook.
