“Sunken” Mustangs May Have Had a Happier Ending
Following our item on the Australia-bound Mustangs on p. 88 of the January issue, additional research has indicated that these aircraft may have fortunately met a better fate than that reported in our article.
Sydney publisher, Kevin Weldon, in association with GEO magazine, were interested in launching a recovery operation for the sunken aircraft and in the course of their research with the RAAF’s historical unit, the following information was uncovered. Apparently, the Goonawarra was a Swedish vessel on a regular run across the Pacific between San Francisco and Australia. Sweden, though a neutral country during WW2 was still able to carry lend-lease goods on behalf of the allies.
