A strong seller on the North American regional market has been the 36-seat Saab SF340. Air Midwest operates 5 340s in support of the Eastern Airlines hub at Kansas City and Ozark's hub at St.Louis. Air Midwest's fortunes have boomed since its adaption of dual designator status with the two larger carriers.
Dual Designators Making Big Impact on US Commuter Scene
Dual Designators: a US Deregulation Success Story
Since the introduction of deregulation in the late seventies there certainly has been no lack of change so far as the overall US air transport industry is concerned.
Commuter operators, hard hit during the 1981 air traffic controller’s strike and the recession of the same period, are now fighting back though largely as a result of a post-deregulation invention in the form of the two-letter dual designator.
What is a two-letter dual designator and just why is it quietly revolutionising regional air transportation in America? Basically, a dual designator is a commuter, or regional as the Americans call them, that directly links up with a larger major carrier. The approved commuter then adopts a similar livery to that of its new “parent” and in many cases changes its name to reflect the direct association with the major. In return, the commuter gets to share the larger carrier’s two-letter designation (flight number coding) on the reservations system in such a way as it is shown as a connecting service under the auspices of the major.
