VH-ABK, photographed at Bankstown in 1984, is now grounded due to main spar corrosion and is used as a source of spares for the last remaining Dove on the Australian Register, VH-ABM. The Dove In Australian Service
The de Havilland DH. 104 Dove
Part Twenty-Two in a Series Examining the Airliners That Established Civil Aviation in Australia
The de Havilland Dove was a most successful postwar product from the talented team at Hatfield. Based on the Brabazon Committee’s Type 58 aircraft which was intended to replace the Rapide, de Havilland designed the D. H. 104.
In charge of design was R. E. Bishop who was responsible for many famous aircraft to emerge from de Havilland over a period of several decades. He joined de Havilland as an apprentice in 1921 and apart from the Dove, was associated with the design of such diverse aircraft as the D. H. 95 Flamingo, D. H. 98 Mosquito, D. H. 106 Comet and D. H. 108. With such an illustrious company it comes as no surprise that the Dove evolved as a sturdy reliable aircraft that was to sell in large numbers.
