Department Slammed in Parliamentary Report
The formal report of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Expenditure has slammed the Department of Aviation for gross contradictions in its safety philosophy and for failing to adequately communicate within its own hierarchy and to the aviation community it is designed to serve.
The report is the culmination of stage one of the Committee’s in-depth enquiry into allegations made by Mr Dick Smith in his book, “Two Years in the Aviation Hall of Doom”. The Committee received more than 800 submissions, an all-time record by a very large factor, backing a variety of accusations made in the book against the DofA.
The initial report by the Committee, which was originally conceived and chaired by the Member for Canberra, Mrs Ros Kelly, dealt purely with the Darling Harbour helipad fiasco as the Committee felt that this one case more than any other reflected the broad range of grievances that affected the entire aviation industry in its day to day workings with the Department.
