Singapore Airlines has taken delivery of the first two of four 757s ordered from Boeing last year. SIA will take delivery of all four 757s by the end of the year. The airline began regional service with its fleet of Pratt & Whitney PW2037-powered 757s last December.

Raaf Grounds Sabre in Surprise Move:
The RAAF has grounded its Historic Flight Sabre (refer p. 18 this edition) in a move that has bewildered supporters of the programme. The primary reasons for the grounding are a lack of funds and insufficient time to guarantee the level of maintenance the aircraft requires.
Australian Aviation believes that if the air- craft was operated to civil standards it would be far more viable to operate in terms of maintenance manhours and cost. While RAAF servicing standards are excellent, they do tend to support and maintain a wide variety of equipment in the Sabre which could have been replaced with modern equipment to re- duce maintenance costs. Examples of this would be the old radios and transponders which are extremely difficult to support in terms of cost and time and yet could be repla- ced by a standard VHF radio and a three-kilo transponder for minimal expense. Unfortunately the RAAF ‘system’ cannot cope with anything this flexible and therefore the Sabre was forced to carry an operating cost burden far in excess of practical terms by civilian standards.
