Work is progressing on the Israeli Lavi fighter. This is the engineering mockup which visibly demonstrates the design similarities to the General Dynamics F-16. The Lavi though will be much smaller and will be powered by a single Pratt & Whitney PW1120 turbofan of 20,000lb thrust. First flight of the Lavi will be in 1986 while initial operational capability will be attained in 1990.

Malibu Breaks Record:
Honolulu to Sydney non-stop in a single-engine production lighting is certainly a record to be proud of. This ultra-long-range record for an FÁI Group C-1d aircraft now lies in the possession of Pacific Aviation following their 5,127-mile delivery flight of a Piper Malibu last December. Prior to departing Honolulu the same aircraft had flown from Oakland, a distance of nearly two and a half thousand miles and had to abandon an attempt at flying non-stop between Florida and Hawaii following adverse headwinds en- route. Pacific Aviation will no doubt be trying another time to make a one-stop flight between Florida, where Piper are now headquartered, and Bankstown. Full story of the epic flight will be revealed in our June edition which will also include a colour spread and a Malibu handling appraisal.
Meanwhile, Piper have rolled out the 100th Malibu less than a year after series production commenced. Malibus are currently being built at the rate of 8/10 a month, an unequalled high for a piston single nowadays, and it is hoped that some 220 Malibus will be delivered by year end. Pacific Aviation is expecting two more aircraft this year, one in July and another in October and presently has two on the register. Pacific also are planning a demonstration tour of the 400mph-cruise LS400 (ex- Cheyenne IV) later this year in an effort to rejuvenate the twin turboprop market.
