Defence Minister Beazley Definitely for AEW

The Air Force seems certain to have an invaluable ally in the new Minister for Defence, Mr. Kim Beazley, when the issue of acquiring an Airborne Early Warning capability is pushed harder soon. In a recent interview, Mr. Beazley made it clear that he personally had a lot of sympathy for the arguments in favour of the RAAF getting AEW in the not-too-distant future. He said that while the Government had not yet taken a position on acquiring AEW, he perceived there was something of a gap in the Force Structure of the Armed Forces’ growing capabilities without AEW.

The RAAF’s Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal David Evans, who retires in the mid-year, told AUSTRALIAN AVIATION he hoped a decision to give the RAAF an airborne early warning capability would come in the 1986-87 financial year. At present the plan was to have AEW aircraft in service with the RAAF in 1991-92 but there were proposals to advance that to 1990-91.
