BAe constructed an excellent full size mockup of the single-seat Mk 200 for the Farnborough air show. Evident is the large nose which is capable of taking a wide variety of radars ranging from simple range-only units to a multi-function radar such as the Hughes APG-65 as used in the F-18. The aircraft can also be configured with a wide variety of sensors and features internal armament of two 27 mm Mauser cannons. This mockup is equipped with twin 190 gl tanks and a BAe Sea Eagle antishipping sea skimmer on the centreline pylon.
Update – BAe Hawk 200
With total sales of the Hawk jet trainer now having exceeded 600 units, it is not surprising that British Aerospace Kingston have decided to bite the bullet and proceed with the development of a single-seat dedicated ground support version of their Hawk.
Designated Hawk 200, the single-seater will carry all the modern offensive and defensive avionics of the uprated export Mk 100 in addition to a combination of Laser Spot Tracker, Flir unit and an inbuilt nose radar for both air-to-air and air-to-ground modules.
The primary long-term market for the Mk 200 will be as an eventual replacement for such types as the Hawker Hunter, F-5 A , MiG-19 and McDonnell Douglas A-4 Skyhawk. Primary competitors at present are the new Aeritalia/Embraer AMX, the Alpha Jet and a large assortment of second-hand A-7 and A-4 aircraft. Hawk itself has now notched up sales to no less than 12 operators which might have some follow-on sales capability worth further investigation. Oddly enough, the largest future operator of the type, the US Navy, could also be interested in the single-seater as a future ACM Top Gun Aggressor aircraft to replace their ageing TA-4s.
