Profile – Boeing 727

The completion of the Boeing 727 production in 1984 was yet another chapter in the at-times stormy history of an aircraft produced in greater numbers than any other airliner. Launched at a time when Boeing had been experiencing financial problems, the 727 grew and improved to win an enormous list of orders which resulted in a total of 1,832 being built.

Profile of the Most Popular Airliner Ever Built

Comprehensive market surveys begun by Boeing in 1955 pointed the way to the 727. Other earlier surveys conducted before 1950 indicated a first need for long-range jet aircraft to serve the U. S. transcontinental and trans-Atlantic routes. The 707 design emerged to fulfil this need.

As piston-engined airliners became obsolescent, it became apparent that new, jet-powered medium-range transports would be needed and the fast 720 was designed for that role. As older piston and turboprop airliners were relegated by the newer jets to shorter (and less economic) route segments, it soon became obvious that the time was opportune to offer a third member of the Boeing ‘family’ of airliners.
