Many of the Ansett-ANA Viscounts were either leased from TAA or inherited from defunct Butler Air Transport. VH-BAT was Butler's first V747 Viscount, having entered service in December, 1955. BAT then was absorbed into the Ansett-ANA fleet in September, 1958 and finally re-registered as VH-RMO in May, 1963 shortly before its premature retirement
Viscount In Australian Service
The Vickers Viscount
Part Eighteen in a Series Examining the Airliners That Established Civil Aviation in Australia
The Vickers Viscount brought about a major change in the Australian domestic airline environment. It signalled the end of the piston engine for major trunk route equipment and heralded the accelerating change to gas turbine power which now dominates the airways.
The Viscount was introduced by TAA in 1954 and gave that airline a dominant lead in passenger traffic. The consequences which were to follow its introduction into Australian use were dramatic and probably unforeseen in 1954.
The Viscount arose from investigations made by the Brabazon committee during 1942/43. They were exploring various categories of airliner which would be required in the post war era. One of these was for an economical airliner to serve European routes. When the second Brabazon committee was convened in 1945, several powerplant proposals were considered including piston and turboprop versions. They opted for a turboprop version known as the IIB and approached Vickers to build four examples.
