A quarter century of Electra operations in Australia officially ended onthe31st December 1983 when Ansett formally withdrew their three ElectraFreighters from commercial service The three remaining aircraft(VH-RMA, RMB&AMC) amassed over50,000 flight hoursand40,000 landings each without serious mishap.AnsettAirFreightis now utilising the services of a nighttime freight only 767, 727 and a newly delivered dedicated 727 freighter, VH-RMX, in addition to regional support from sub-contracted light twins. ICAO Deliberates on KAL 007 Demise:
The ICAO has finalised its report on what caused a Korean Air Lines Boeing 747 to overfly Soviet territory in August 1983 with the resultant loss of 269 lives when the aircraft was destroyed by Soviet fighter aircraft. ICAO has put forward two probable scenarios. Firstly, that the crew loaded a 10 degree longitudinal error into the navigation system at Anchorage indicating that the aircraft was 190 miles east of its actual position. The second scenario suggests the crew forgot to cut in the INS when they reached the Bethel waypoint. This would result in the 747 following a 246-degree magnetic heading which would have taken it over the track used that night by the flight, ICAO dismissed any suggestion that the aircraft was on a spy mission. Crew negligence was at fault in both instances.
KAL have had a chequered career in recent years in terms of aircraft mishaps. In 1978 they flew a 707 more than a thousand kilometres into the Soviet Union while on a heading almost 180 degrees to that which they were supposed to be on. This aircraft was finally intercepted and brought down by SU-15 fighters resulting in a crash landing on a frozen lake KAL also had a 747 burn out at Los Angeles International in 1980 and during October, 1983 one of their 707 freighters overran the runway at Kimpo. Their most recent accident was at Anchorage in December 1983 when a DC-10 freighter took off on the wrong runway resulting in a collision with a commuter Chieftain.
