Canadair's wingleted Challenger 601 prototype is well into its test programme. Primary difference between the 601 and its 600 stablemate is the farmer's General Electric CF-34-1A turbofans replacing the lower thrust Avco Lycoming ALF502L as used on the 600. The 601 has a thrust increase of just on 22% compared with the 600 allowing it to operate at higher payloads in short runway/high-temperature environments; range will be in the region of 3500 nautical miles at max takeoff payload.

Will We Be Flying on LP Gas Soon?
Aerospatiale has been test-flying a 180 hp Tobago and a Rallye on LP gas for five months now in an evaluation of the possibilities of using LP gas as an alternative to avgas in Piston-engined aircraft. Lycoming are also involved with the evaluation and results to date indicate a considerable saving by using LP gas. On the Rallye the consumption of 35 It/hr is claimed as against 42 It/hr for avgas; LP gas is also considerably cheaper and is lighter in volume though this is largely negated by the special pressure tanks required to accept it. Engine modifications are simple and little different from those required for automotive use, a modified gas carburettor is installed in addition to engine oil being circulated via the vaporisation unit reducing engine wear and increasing oil cooling potential, a boon for operations through the Australian summer. Aerospatiale, via Socata, are hoping to gain FAR 23 certification before the end of this year and will market an a conversion kit that will sell for around five to six thousand dollars.
Masling Invest in Maintenance Facility:
Following the sale of Masling commuter airlines to Wings Australia in 1981, airline founder Jack Masling has invested more than a million dollars in a specialised engine and airframe accessory maintenance facility based at Cootamundra airport. The facility will be operated by Masling Industries and will concentrate on servicing such items as starter generators, fuel control pumps and other similar engine accessories. The all-new facility is scheduled to become operational this October and will provide local employment for around thirty people.
