A new Royal Navy frigate, the Type 23, is to have a specially designed platform for a new helicopter, the Sea King replacement. The helicopter, the EH 101, is to be built on a collaborative basis by Westland and Agusta to meet the needs of the navies of both nations.

Inactive Service:
When Tony Self commenced writing his informative ‘In Active Service’ feature for this magazine back in early 1980 it would have seemed difficult to believe that one of our future operations of interest, the RAN Fleet Air Arm, would barely exist by the time the series was due to end ten issues later. Alas, 11 almost has and hence the omission of our concluding article in this series, which was to have been included in this issue. We will present the FAA in our final ‘In Active Service’ feature as soon as possible.
New Soviet Fighters Nearing Squadron Service:
The US DoD reports that the new MiG-29 has been clocked at better than Mach 2.8 and demonstrates an instantaneous turn rate of 16.8 deg/sec and a sustained turn rate of 8 2 deg/sec. This aircraft is expected to become operational by 1985. Also well into their test programmes are two new Sukhoi aircraft, the Su-25, similar in mission capability to the USAF A-10 Thunderbolt II and the Su-27, a Mach 2.3 twin-engined twin-tailed aircraft not dissimilar to the F-18.
