As the British Aerospace 146 feederliner approaches certification later this year it will undertake 175 hours of intensive route flying in the hands of airline flight crews. Agreement has been reached for British Air Ferries, the Southend-based airline, to carry out this flying which forms the vital final step towards the issue of the British-type certificate of airworthiness. British Air Ferries' operations currently include short-sector routes, feeder services and extensive use in tropical climates, for all of which the BAe 146 Is particularly suitable. The airline has a tradition of operating British aircraft and currently has a fleet of twelve Dart Heralds, two HS 125s and twelve Viscounts (to be increased to 18 during this year). The BAe 146-100 is seen as a logical aircraft to develop services worked at present by the 76-seat Viscounts

New Department Offers Hope for the Future:

The introduction of the Department of Air, replacing the multi-model and much-maligned DoTA, is certain to improve the working relationship that aviation has with its bureaucrats Mr Wal Fife, the new Minister of Aviation has a good track record as a man willing to learn from others and get the job done. Around three-quarters of the old DoTA have transferred to DOA highlighting the large workforce aviation required in the Department’s day-to-day operations. The permanent head of the new DOA is Col Freeland who was formerly deputy secretary of policy and planning and is ably suited to institute procedural improvements aimed at streamlining the operation of DOA. Mr Jim Schofield is deputy secretary of operations and Mike Ryan is the deputy secretary of policy and planning. Gone is Charles Halton who now resides in the new Ministry of Dept of Defence Supoort, a move that begs much rejoicing within aviation in general The overall benefits to our industry will be apparent in the long term as well as providing a base of aviation specialists who can give their full and professional attention to the many problems affecting aviation in Australia.
